Seattle, a city on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, is surrounded by water, mountains and evergreen forests, and contains thousands of acres of parkland. Washington State&rsquo;s largest city, it&rsquo;s home to a large tech industry, with Microsoft and Amazon headquartered in its metropolitan area. The futuristic Space Needle, a 1962 World&rsquo;s Fair legacy, is its most iconic landmark.
Seattle has a history of boom-and-bust cycles, like many other cities near areas of extensive natural and mineral resources. Seattle has risen several times economically, then gone into precipitous decline, but it has typically used those periods to rebuild solid infrastructure.
The first such boom, covering the early years of the city, rode on the lumber industry. During this period the road now known as Yesler Way won the nickname "Skid Road," supposedly after the timber skidding down the hill to Henry Yesler's sawmill. The later dereliction of the area may be a possible origin for the term which later entered the wider American lexicon as Skid Row. Like much of the American West, Seattle saw numerous conflicts between labor and management, as well as ethnic tensions that culminated in the anti-Chinese riots of 1885&ndash;1886. This violence originated with unemployed whites who were determined to drive the Chinese from Seattle (anti-Chinese riots also occurred in Tacoma). In 1900, Asians were 4.2% of the population. Authorities declared martial law and federal troops arrived to put down the disorder.
Seattle had achieved sufficient economic success that when the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 destroyed the central business district, a far grander city-center rapidly emerged in its place. Finance company Washington Mutual, for example, was founded in the immediate wake of the fire. However, the Panic of 1893 hit Seattle hard.

Seattle

Ballard is one of Seattle&rsquo;s oldest neighborhoods, founded in 1853 and annexed to Seattle in 1907. Ballard has Scandinavian roots and strong ties with the marine and fishing industries that continue to this day. A hub for local artists, creative boutiques and gourmet bistros, it has become a destination for local Seattle music and nightlife, the majority of which is located in Ballard&rsquo;s historically-protected core. Ballard is unique, with one foot planted in Seattle&rsquo;s colorful past and the other stepping into Seattle&rsquo;s vibrant future. In recent years, single family homes have given way to urban high density housing, including condominiums, townhouses and apartments. There are a variety of neighborhood parks as well as a strong community center and pool. Located northwest of downtown Seattle, the downtown core is easily accessed from 15th Avenue NW.&nbsp;
Landmarks of Ballard include the&nbsp;Ballard Locks, the&nbsp;Nordic Museum, the Shilshole Bay Marina, and&nbsp;Golden Gardens Park. The neighborhood's main thoroughfares running north&ndash;south are Seaview, 32nd, 24th, Leary, 15th, and 8th Avenues N.W. East&ndash;west traffic is carried by N.W. Leary Way and N.W. 85th, 80th, 65th, and Market Streets (east- and westbound). The&nbsp;Ballard Bridge&nbsp;carries 15th Avenue over Salmon Bay to the&nbsp;Interbay&nbsp;neighborhood, and the&nbsp;Salmon Bay Bridge&nbsp;carries the&nbsp;BNSF Railway tracks across the bay, west of the Ballard Locks.&nbsp;Ballard is located entirely within&nbsp;Seattle City Council&nbsp;District 6, which also includes the neighborhoods of Crown Hill,&nbsp;Green Lake&nbsp;and Phinney Ridge, as well as most of Fremont,&nbsp;North Beach/Blue Ridge, and&nbsp;Wallingford.&nbsp;Ballard is part of the&nbsp;Seattle Public Schools&nbsp;and the&nbsp;Washington State Legislature's&nbsp;36th legislative district. At the federal level, Ballard is part of the&nbsp;United States House of Representatives's&nbsp;7th congressional district.
The area now called Ballard was settled by the Dx?d?w?ab&scaron; (Duwamish) Tribe after the last glacial period. There were plentiful salmon and clams in the region. The U.S. government code in the CDC (Centers for Disease Control which maintains a list of race and ethnicity for tracking) for this group is American Indian, Puget Sound Salish (Code A01-M43, H71).&nbsp;(There is no "Shilshole" tribe). The Burke Museum has artifacts from the group of Duwamish who lived at Shilshole.&nbsp;The references say that before non-Natives arrived, the group living around Shilshole may have been in decline due to a "great catastrophe". The remaining dozen or fewer families were evicted by non-Natives in the mid-19th century. One source suggests that the decline of the Shilshole dwelling Salish might have been due to raiding from Natives from farther north (Queen Charlotte's Island) and these raids also alarmed non-Native settlers. The last member of the Shilshole native group-HWelch&rsquo;teed or "Salmon Bay Charlie"-was forcibly removed to allow construction of the Hiram Chittendon Locks.

Ballard

Once hoped to be the location for the state&rsquo;s capital, this neighborhood is filled with historic mansions, elegant old craftsman&rsquo;s and classic brick apartment buildings all nestled on lush tree-lined streets. At the crest of Capitol Hill is sprawling Volunteer Park and the Seattle Asian Art Museum. Within blocks of this serene setting lies Broadway, one of the edgier sidewalk scenes in Seattle. Broadway, along with the up-and-coming Pike-Pine corridor, offers a dose of counterculture, ethnic restaurants, independent movie theatres and an active nightlife. The "Hill" is also home to SCCC and Seattle U, adding students to the creative mix of musicians and artists who call this neighborhood home. Minutes from I-5, Capitol Hill borders the east edge of downtown. Long known as the home of Seattle&rsquo;s gay community, Capitol Hill offers urban living that is both exciting and diverse.

Capitol Hill

The Central District is a diverse residential cluster of historically African-American neighborhoods. Culture, art and history exhibits are on display at the Northwest African American Museum. The 1915 Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, a former synagogue, is an arts hub showing films, plays and musicals. Ethiopian and soul food eateries dot the district, along with an increasing number of hip bars and cafes.

Central District

Bordering the eastern shores of Lake Union north of downtown, Eastlake is home to one of Seattle&rsquo;s largest houseboat populations. Recognized as a Seattle neighborhood in the 1890s, Eastlake became a hub of industry. Boeing&rsquo;s first factory was located here. In 1962, Interstate 5 was pushed through, forever changing the Eastern edge of Eastlake. The neighborhood is a charming and eclectic mix of houseboats, single-family homes, apartments, townhouses, condos and small businesses. Eastlake Avenue offers a variety of coffee shops, restaurants and retail. Over the past twenty years, residents of Eastlake have worked hard to conserve the character of the neighborhood by planting trees along its&rsquo; streets and developing shoreline parks.

Eastlake

Edmonds is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. It is located in the southwest corner of the county, facing Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west. The city is part of the Seattle metropolitan area and is located 15 miles (24 km) north of Seattle and 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Everett. With a population of 39,709 residents in the 2010 U.S. census, Edmonds is the third most populous city in the county. The estimated population in 2019 was 42,605. Edmonds was established in 1876 by logger George Brackett, who bought the land claim of an earlier settler. It was incorporated as a city in 1890, shortly before the arrival of the Great Northern Railway. Early residents of the city were employed by the shingle mills and logging companies that operated in the area until the 1950s. The hills surrounding Edmonds were developed into suburban bedroom communities in the mid-to-late 20th century and subsequently annexed into the city. Edmonds is a regional hub for the arts, with museums, specialized facilities, and major annual festivals within the city's downtown area. The city is connected to nearby areas by two state highways and the state ferry system, which operates a ferry route to Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula. Public transit service in Edmonds is centered around the downtown train station, served by Amtrak and Sounder commuter trains, and includes several Community Transit bus routes that travel through outlying neighborhoods.

Edmonds

As the self-proclaimed "Center of the Universe," Fremont is a mix of the artistic and urban professional. It is home to sculptural curiosities and a lively mix of restaurants and bars, artist studios, organic markets, boutiques and coffee shops. With an official motto of "Delibertus Quirkus" which means..."Freedom to be Peculiar", you know that this neighborhood is truly unique. Once a bohemian part of town, artists flocked to the area because of low rent. In recent years, with businesses like Adobe and Getty Images relocating to Fremont, the area has accommodated a growing number of professionals, young and old. Homes range from turn-of-the-century, to small cottages, to ultra-modern townhouses. Just north of Queen Anne - and with easy Highway 99 access - Fremont is a short commute to downtown.

Fremont

Anchored by a 50,000 year old glacial lake and park, Green Lake is often called the &lsquo;Central Park&rsquo; of Seattle. A recreation destination used by an estimated 1 million people per year, runners, in-line skaters, cyclists and walkers love the 2.8 mile paved path that circles the lake. The area includes a wading pool, tennis and basketball courts, fields for soccer and baseball, and a Pitch-and-Putt Golf Course. Adjoining both I-5 and Highway 99, this neighborhood is the height of convenience for commuters. Homes in the area are predominantly single-family residences and townhouses are becoming a popular and more affordable option in the area. Along the north and eastside of the lake, restaurants, bars and coffee houses cater to the neighborhood residents and active visitors alike.

Green Lake

Situated on the north end of a ridge between Green Lake and Ballard, breathtaking views of both the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges can often be seen from Greenwood. Restaurants, pubs, boutiques, and antique shops line this walking neighborhood&rsquo;s main drag, which is highly reminiscent of 1950&rsquo;s Seattle. Homes are a diverse mix of bungalows, brick tudors, mid-century and new construction. Neighborhood events that bring this tight-knit community together include the Greenwood/Phinney Art Walk in May, the Greenwood Classic Car &amp; Road Show in June, a neighborhood Seafair parade in August, and holiday activities in December. This is a neighborhood that is redefining itself as a destination for the arts, antiques, and dining. Greenwood has easy access to both I-5 and Highway 99.

Greenwood

Kirkland is a city in King County, Washington, United States. A suburb east of Seattle, its population was 93,010 in a 2019 census estimate, which made it the sixth largest city in the county and the thirteenth largest in the state. The city's downtown waterfront has restaurants, art galleries, a performing arts center, public parks, beaches, and a collection of public art, primarily bronze sculptures. Kirkland was the original home of the Seattle Seahawks; the NFL team's headquarters and training facility were located at the Lake Washington Shipyard (now Carillon Point) along Lake Washington for their first ten seasons (1976&ndash;85), then at nearby Northwest University through 2007. Warehouse chain Costco previously had its headquarters in Kirkland. While Costco is now headquartered in Issaquah, the city is the namesake of its "Kirkland Signature" store brand.

Kirkland

Lake Forest Park is a suburban city in King County, Washington, United, located northeast of Seattle. It was developed in the 20th century as a bedroom community with single-family housing on medium to large-sized lots. Less than 4% of the city's land is zoned commercial, largely concentrated in one location, and there are no industrial areas. The city is situated at the northwest end of Lake Washington along State Route 522, which provides connections to Seattle and Bothell. Lake Forest Park includes several parks and nature reserves, access to the Burke&ndash;Gilman Trail, and organized summer events. The population was 12,598 at the 2010 census.

Lake Forest Park

Lynnwood&nbsp;is a city in&nbsp;Snohomish County, Washington, United States. The city is part of the&nbsp;Seattle metropolitan area&nbsp;and is located 16 miles (26&nbsp;km) north of&nbsp;Seattle&nbsp;and 13 miles (21&nbsp;km) south of&nbsp;Everett, near the junction of&nbsp;Interstate 5&nbsp;and&nbsp;Interstate 405. It is the fourth-largest city in Snohomish County, with a population of 35,836 in the&nbsp;2010 U.S. census.
Lynnwood is a&nbsp;suburban&nbsp;bedroom community&nbsp;for Seattle, Everett and&nbsp;Bellevue. It has one of the largest concentrations of retailers in the region, anchored by the&nbsp;Alderwood Mall&nbsp;and businesses along major streets. The city also has a&nbsp;community college, a&nbsp;convention center, and a major&nbsp;transit center, located in the developing&nbsp;city center.
The Lynnwood area was logged and settled by&nbsp;homesteaders&nbsp;in the late 19th century and early 20th century, including the development of&nbsp;Alderwood Manor&nbsp;as a planned farming community. Lynnwood, named for the wife of a realtor, emerged in the late 1940s around the intersection of&nbsp;Highway 99&nbsp;and 196th Street Southwest. The city was&nbsp;incorporated&nbsp;on April 23, 1959, and grew into a suburban hub in the years following the completion of Interstate 5 and Interstate 405. Alderwood Mall opened in 1979 and spurred the transformation of eastern Lynnwood into a retail and office district.
